Leah Bruno is a Vancouver-based pianist specializing in both new music performance and dance collaboration. Leah started playing piano at age seven and has since studied violin, voice, percussion, and composition. Leah graduated from the UBC School of Music (BMus ‘24) where she studied piano with Terence Dawson and Rena Sharon. Leah has also studied privately with other respected musicians both in Vancouver and abroad, including Douglas Finch (improvisation), Stephen Chatman (composition), Edward Top (composition) and Michael Jarrett (percussion). Her breadth of experience leads to a uniquely nuanced performance practice.  Leah’s work is lyrical, insightful, and committed.

While at UBC, Leah began performing new music and working with emerging composers. She has since recorded a number of premiers both inside and outside UBC (Gabriella Yorke, Albert Wu, Hope Salmonson). As a new music advocate, Leah is respected for her open-mindedness and enthusiasm for the vision of each composer she works with.

In 2022, Leah discovered her knack for translating movement into music. A fluent improviser, Leah plays a variety of genres for ballet, including broadway, new age, popular standards, and the RAD repertoire. Leah has played at Goh Ballet, Harbour Dance, and Dance Collective, and currently plays classes for Ballet BC and Arts Umbrella.

Also an educator, Leah is committed to developing thoughtfulness and confidence in other musicians. She consistently trains her students to think critically and problem-solve while at the piano. Leah teaches beginning through advanced piano lessons, as well as beginning voice lessons.
